What is Tapovana?
A sacred, Shivagange hill-view Tapovana for the study, practice and living expression of Sanathana Dharma is taking shape at Shivagange, near Dabaspet, on the Bangalore–Bombay National Highway.
Spread over peaceful, serene, holy land marked by huge rocky hillocks, valleys and slopes, Tapovana provides an opportunity for elders, seekers and students to build their inner strength through the study and practice of Sanskrit, yoga, dhyana, bhajans, cultural programmes and more.
Its objectives are practical and spiritual in equal measure — to preserve and develop knowledge, and to support people through every season of life. Adi Guru Sri Shankaraacharya spent his entire life of thirty-two years for the upliftment of society, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Sree Shaankara Tapovana Shivagange aims to spread his philosophy, and to protect, preserve and spread Sanathana Dharma.

A Statue, a Sanctum, and a Place to Study
Stone Sourced from the Very Land it Blesses
The granite for the statue and for the temple sanctums was quarried from within the Tapovana’s own 2 acres 34 guntas — huge rocky hillocks and boulders that are part of the land’s natural character. Each block was cut and prepared on site before being shaped into sanctum or statue.
The Shivagange hill temple gopuram rises in the background of the quarry — a reminder that this Tapovana takes its name, and its setting, from the hill itself.
Sri Adi Shankaraacharya, Carved from a Single Stone
An eighteen-foot tall monolithic statue of Sri Adi Shankaraacharya overlooks the entire Tapovana from a small hillock. The graceful statue was carved from a single granite block — quarried from the very land it stands on — by the celebrated sculptor Sri Ashok Gudigar, and is being installed as foundation work nears completion.
Students and seekers will study and practice his commentaries — the Bhashyas on the Ten Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahma Sutra — with the support and guidance of scholars, under the watchful eyes of Adi Shankaraacharya himself.
Sanctums of Solid Granite
Temples dedicated to Srimatha Annapoorneswari, along with Sri Ganapathy, Sri Subramanya, and Sri Bruhadeeswara, are being built with solid granite blocks — offering divine grace and supporting seekers as they develop inner peace and tranquility.
The Garbha Griha (sanctums) of Srimatha Annapoorneswari, Sri Ganesha and Sri Subramanya are complete. RCC roofing for the Mukha Mantapa and Prakara is being completed, and the kitchen and dining halls are getting ready to welcome seekers and devotees.

Spacious Halls for Study and Practice
Spacious halls are being planned to support the many activities of the Tapovana — from Sanskrit and scriptural study to yoga, dhyana, bhajans and cultural programmes. Plans include a Gurukula-type residential campus for students and Adhyathma sadhakas, with a Sanskrit and Veda Pata Shala and Vedantha classes.
Further structures planned include halls for yoga and meditation, rooms for Pandiths, students and staff, and kitchen, dining and bath facilities — all carried forward under the blessings of the Jagadgurus of Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetam, Sri Sri Sri Bharathi Theertha Maha Swamiji and Sri Sri Sri Vidhushekara Bharathi Swamiji.
